South Luangwa is one of Africa’s best parks, and Zambia’s most visited park. Great game viewing of a huge variety of wildlife, exceptional guiding, nocturnal game drives and great walking safaris are just some of what makes South Luangwa special. The concentration of wildlife around the Luangwa River which is one of the highest in Africa. Despite its popularity, it still offers vast wild areas and relatively few visitors when compared to the parks of East Africa or the Kruger. In the areas away from the park’s Mfuwe entrance gate there are few visitors. The landscape is a patchwork of floodplains, oxbow lakes, grassland and productive Miombo and Mopane woodlands. 

In the dry season, large herds of elephants and many antelope species converge on the Luangwa River. The antelope are followed by their predators making for amazing encounters, while the river teems with hippo and crocodile. The river and its tributaries are the lifeblood of the Park and support a great diversity of habitats and wildlife. South Luangwa boasts over 60 mammal species and 400 species of birds. There are several subspecies unique to the area including the striking Thornicroft’s giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest and Crawshay’s zebras. In the wet season, several camps offer game viewing by boat for a different perspective.
