Kariba

The Sunset Capital of the World

Zimbabwe

The pink fireball of the sun sinks over Lake Kariba’s horizon, silhouetting the dead tree trunks against the bright orange sky. A formation of geese crosses the bright and colourful backdrop, serenaded by a deep concerto of grunting hippos. Sundowner in hand, a day of astonishing wildlife viewing behind you… it feels like the most peaceful place in the world. At that moment, it is. In fact, most evenings it is. It’s not just at sunset Kariba seduces you into forgetting another world exists. From sunrise until the glittering stars fill the expansive night sky, this destination will swoop you up, filling your soul with serenity, wonder and possibly a touch of bewilderment at the beauty it displays.

Kariba is the largest man-made dam in the world. Its shorelines stretch for hundreds of kilometres, many of them too remote to access unless by boat. It will give you a whole new perspective on what it is to safari in Africa. Kariba, and Matusadona National Park, in particular, boast herds of elephant, lion, all manner of antelope and some of the last black rhino in the country. Hekaya highly recommends Kariba. We’d love to put together a magical holiday for you here.
