Lake Malawi, Malawi

A Warm and Welcoming Tropical Paradise

Malawi is known as a small country with a big lake and an even larger smile- renowned for the friendliness of its people as well as the giant lake that takes up much of the country. The third-largest lake in Africa resembles more of an inland sea with shimmering water, sandy beaches, gentle waves and an abundance of tropical fish.

The lake is the country's defining geographical feature and is bounded by the high plateau of the great rift valley. On the southern end of the lake, the shimmering waters is the protected area of Lake Malawi National Park. This is re a designated Unesco World Heritage Site. The lake’s clear waters and endemic colourful cichlid fish provide excellent opportunities for watersports. Sailing, diving, paddleboarding, snorkelling and time spent relaxing on idyllic beaches while getting to know some of the friendliest people on the planet is what defines Malawi and makes it a great addition to any safari. While we at Hekaya have focussed on Malawi’s exceptional beachside experience there are also some safari opportunities here- get in touch if you are interested in a custom itinerary that includes them.

Malawi’s dry season runs from May to October. There is very little if any rain over this time and from May to August cool early morning temperatures can be expected although days are still sunny and warm. The weather warms toward September and October peaking at around 31°C/88°F just before the rains arrive and bring much-needed water to the landscape.

The warm, wet season lasts from November to April. November itself is unpredictable with rain showers in the afternoons being common. December through to March are the wettest months with afternoon downpours almost guaranteed. Day time temperatures are around 29°C/84°F and the humidity is high. In April the rain slows and temperatures cool again.

Best Time to Travel to Malawi

Malawi’s lovely tropical climate means it is warm year-round. Travel is easiest and lake-side holidays at their best in the dry season from May until the end of October. In the wet season, from November to April, afternoon showers are common and humidity is high. Temperatures do not vary hugely throughout the year but the wet season months are a few degrees colder than the dry season months.

Citizens of most countries can obtain a visa upon arrival. Information about visas, fees and application process is available from Malawi’s Department of Immigration.
