Khwai

Where the Delta Meets the Woodland

Botswana

Khwai is a community-run concession on the eastern border of the Moremi Game Reserve and the Okavango Delta. The area is named for the Khwai River which separates the Moremi Game Reserve from the concession. The narrow hippo filled stream is fed by floodwaters. It sparkles and spreads at places forming lagoons and floodplains and it provides nourishment for the area’s rich wildlife. The varied ecosystem of lagoons, floodplains, grassland and woodland areas makes Khwai an excellent location for viewing all types of wildlife. Lions, leopards and wild dogs are present in good numbers and if you are lucky you may even see even cheetah. It is also a great area for birding with many raptors breeding here and the mix of habitats making it a birding wonderland.

The Khwai villagers run the Khwai Concession and all proceeds from tourism go directly to helping the local people. As it is in a concession area and not a National Park you can also do varied activities such as night drives, walking safaris and dugout canoe (mokoro) trips. A mokoro ride offers a unique opportunity to experience the ecosystem at water level, eye to eye with hippos and herons. This is also a wonderful way to engage your local guide who pilots the mokoro using a special pole.
