Swakopmund & Walvis Bay

Quaint German Towns Where the Desert Meets the Sea

Namibia

The coastal town of Swakopmund is known for being Namibia’s adrenalin capital. The beach resort town boasts a quaint atmosphere and many fine examples of German colonial architecture. The choice of accommodation, seafood restaurants and activities are good here. It is surrounded by desert and activities include desert tours, balloon rides, skydiving, dune boarding and quad biking to take in the desert scenery as well as marine cruises, kayaking and canoeing to take in the wildlife in the sea.

Nearby the quieter harbour of Walvis Bay, sheltered by the Pelican Point sand spit, is home to abundant birdlife including flamingos and pelicans. Fishing boats and ships ply the wildlife-rich waters- full of dolphins, whales and Cape fur seals. To the east of the bay, the Namib Desert begins. Both towns are great stops on a family trip with lots of options to keep older children and teens happy and occupied.
