Liuwa Plain National Park

Remote, Untouched and Luxurious

Zambia

Liuwa Plain National Park is Zambia’s hottest, off-the-beaten-track destination, and its remoteness is a major part of the appeal. Liuwa is a wild and raw park that few tourists ever see, with just one ultra-luxurious lodge. Liuwa has a long and rich history, the area was originally proclaimed a protected area by the King of the Lozi people in the 1880s. Today some of the Lozi people still live a traditional lifestyle in the park. If you are lucky you can witness the King of the Lozi people move from his dry season home on the floodplain to a site downriver in the moving and spectacular Kuomboka ceremony. It’s a time of great celebration, in which paddlers and drummers resplendent in animal skins and traditional dress move the king in a large flotilla.

Liuwa Plain has a very different environment to other Zambian parks. Liuwa is literally a vast, open, grassy plain that seemingly goes on forever. The second-largest migration in Africa also takes place here. Imagine viewing more than 45, 000 wildebeest and zebra as they move across the flower-strewn plain with no other vehicles in sight. Liuwa is also known for having huge clans of hyaena up to 50 string which are the apex predator in the area. African wild dog, cheetah and lion are also present.
